WELL DONE TO BOTH OF THEM
THIRTY-SEVEN referees from the S.F.A. Edinburgh Branch banded together to raise £1,1000 for the Craig Gowans Memorial Fund. This year will mark the fifth anniversary of the tragic death of the 17-year-old Stewart's Melville High School pupil in a tragic accident that took place on the training ground of Falkirk FC. Craig was allocated the squad number of 37 in the professional club and it was the brainwave of the Memorial Fund convener, Tom Carter, to ask his colleagues in the S.F.A. to donate one match fee each to the fund. Tam said: "There was no problem with that and I got full support from my fellow referees.
All the cash raised will go to the Fund and then on to the Sick Kids. And there is more to come from the referees association. The Edinburgh branch hold a quiz night once a year and the money raised at this year's quiz will also be donated to the fund!" Craig Gowans parents, Sheila and John, attended the handover of the cheque in the clubrooms of Hutchison Vale in Ford's Road in Stenhouse. Also present were seven referees, including Tom Carter and John Gowans said: "I am most grateful to all the referees who contributed to this unique and welcome fund-raising venture thought up by Tom Carter. All the money raised for the fund that keeps the name of our son alive will go to the Sick Kids. Tom Carter has several other fund-raising ventures in place this year and Hutchison Vale and Tynecastle FC will also  promote the second game for the Craig Gowans Memorial Cup and that will take place in July at Saughton Enclosure. Sheila and myself want to express our thanks to everyone. It is much appreciated!" Iain McGill, the Tory candidate for Edinburgh North and Leith in the forthcoming General Election was among the 37 referees who donated a match fee to the Craig Gowans Memorial Fund and he also took time off canvassing for votes to attend the presentation.
