When you talk about Scottish all-round entertainers, the name Tam Cowan won’t be too far off the top of the list. TV presenter, radio host, columnist, restaurant reviewer, after dinner speaker, Tam wears many media hats. What makes him stand out is his ability to be entertaining and skilled at all of them. With a common touch that so endears him to the Scottish psyche, along with his acerbic, ready wit, he holds a special place in the affections of the Scottish, people.
From his hometown of Motherwell, Tam showed early promise as a comedy writer, gaining writing credits for Radio 2’s Week Ending show whilst still at school. He was soon appearing in print with his popular football column at the Evening Times. He caught the attentions of Radio Scotland who were looking for a co-host for a new football show called Off the Ball. Various people tried to get the chemistry right with host Stuart Cosgrove, but as soon as Tam took to the mic, there was only one man for the job. Many years, and two Sony awards, later Tam and Stuart still entertain the Saturday lunchtime audience in the most popular show on Radio Scotland.
Tam moved successfully onto television in 2000 with Offside and his unique style and sense of fun ensured a sure fire hit. The show notched up two Royal Television Society awards for best regional sports programme. Tam is no sycophant when it comes to interviewing his guests and his sense of mischief results in funny and often outrageous interviews. Even the First Minister Jack McConnell didn’t escape Tam’s acerbic tongue! He also fronted Taxi for Cowan also for BBC Scotland and the two shows gained Tam another gong; this time a coveted Royal Television Society award for best regional presenter.
Success on television hasn’t dampened Tam’s love of writing and he still pens his popular twice weekly column in the Daily Record, along with his much admired restaurant reviews.
